Need CLE Credits Before August 31? Don't Panic!

If you're a Minnesota attorney and need to complete your continuing legal education this year, time is running out, but it's not time to panic! This page will help you find the credits you need, at the lowest possible cost. I'll keep this page updated with free and low-cost CLE opportunities as the deadline approaches. These will include my programs, and those offered by other providers. This page is geared mostly for attorneys in Minnesota. However, most of the programs on this site are offered for credit in other states as well.

Automatic Extension to August 31

You were supposed to complete your CLE hours by June 30, and then report the credits by August 31. Fortunately, the CLE Board is not heartless, and an extension is available. In prior years, this extension was automatic, but the Board has not announced an automatic extension this year. You will have to ask for the extension. But once you ask, it's automatic, and there is no fee, as long as you do it now.

All you need to do is go to cle.mn.gov, log in to your account (using the same password you use when you pay your annual bar renewal) and follow the instructions.

I do have two important pieces of advice:

First, take care of the extension right now. It's easy and it's free. If you put it off, you might forget, or the website might be down the day you need to do it.
Second, when you take courses, especially at the end of August, make sure they are approved in advance. Normally, you can take a course and report it, even if it hasn't been approved. But when you report on August 31, all of your courses need to be approved. So if a course is still pending at the end of August, find another course.

Recent CLE Rule Change

The Minnesota CLE rules have recently changed. Under the Supreme Court's Order, starting with the cycle ending in June 2024, Minnesota attorneys are able to get all of their 45 credits with prerecorded programs. This is a real game changer, as such programs are available at low cost and even for free.
