State of Minnesota v. Joseph Haywood Campbell

Minnesota case law summary by Attorney Richard Clem: criminal law.

State of Minnesota v. Joseph Haywood Campbell. MN criminal law

In this first degree murder appeal from Ramsey County, the Minnesota Supreme Court held:

  1. Because the grounds for defense counsel's objection to the admission of out-of-court statements made by one of the State's witnesses were not clear from the context of the objection, the trial court's evidentiary ruling would be reviewed for plain error.
  2. Defendant failed to establish that the allegedly erroneous admission of the witness's out-of-court statements affected his substantial rights.
  3. The trial court's allegedly erroneous admission of Spreigl evidence was harmless because it did not substantially influence the verdict.

No. A13-1713 (Minn. Mar. 18, 2015)
