Program Description

First Amendment Issues in K-12 Education. This program will be a brief overview of First Amendment issues affecting K-12 public education. We'll cover some of the leading cases from the U.S. Supreme Court, the Eighth Circuit, and other courts. Topics will include: school speech, establishment clause, free exercise clause, clothing, school newspapers and yearbooks, distribution of literature, student clubs, off-campus speech, book censorship, and the pledge of allegiance. Live lecture, 60 minutes.

This program is being presented for attorneys and education professionals. In addition to CLE credit, the program is eligible for 1.0 clock hour of continuing education credit for Minnesota teachers.

CLE Credit/Continuing Education Clock Hours for Minnesota Teachers

Minnesota Teachers: This program has not been preapproved by any district, but is eligible for 1.0 clock hour toward your general 125 hour professional development requirement. This program addresses Standard 10 (collaboration, ethics, and relationships) of the Minnesota Board of Teaching standards for professional growth. You will be given a signed certificate of attendance including the date and number of hours, together with the Clock Hour Approval Application Form for you to submit to your district continuing education committee.

Location and Directions

The program will be held in the Community Room of Lunds - University & Central, 25 University Ave. SE, Minneapolis, MN 55414. The store phone number for directions is 612-548-3820. From downtown Minneapolis, you can take a 10-minute bus ride across the river on a 6, 10, 17, or 25 bus to University and Central.

The location is accessible to persons with disabilities. The meeting room is on the second floor, which is served by an elevator. In addition, you can park on the second floor of the parking ramp and come in through that second-floor entrance to the store. About the Speaker

Richard P. Clem is an attorney and continuing legal education (CLE) provider in Minnesota. He has been in private practice in the Twin Cities for 25 years. He has a J.D., cum laude, from Hamline University School of Law in St. Paul and a B.A. in History from the University of Minnesota.
