Richard Clem Continuing Legal Education
High quality, reasonably priced CLE opportunities
$25 per approved credit
August 31 update: If you still need credits before today's deadline, I can still help you out. If you haven't already used your 15 on-demand credits, that is your best option. Check the link below. I'll be checking my e-mail until Midnight, so if you take any of these courses, I will get back to you with confirmation that you completed the course in time for you to report.
If you need "live" credits, the two hours of elimination of bias are still available, and I can present the program this evening.
I'm offering the following conference call CLE programs in August 2015. This is a convenient way to satisfy your CLE requirements, for only $25 per credit. The programs on this page are offered for Minnesota credit, and Wisconsin credit is also available. If these times don't work for you, please contact me, since I can schedule additional programs upon request. Upon registration, you will be given a telephone number and access code. At the time of the program, you simply call in, enter the access code, and listen to the program. You can submit live questions during the program.
Each ethics program covers a different part of the Rules, and these programs can be taken in any order.
The three programs shown above are approved for Minnesota credit, and can be used to satisfy your ethics and bias requirements, as long as you use fewer than 15 hours of "on demand" credit.
If you've already used up your 15 on-demand credits, or want to save them for future programs, then you can inexpensively take care of your ethics and bias credits with the conference call programs on this page. There is no limitation in Minnesota on the use of conference call programs, and you can use these telephone programs for all or any part of your 45 credits. (Wisconsin attorneys can use the on-demand programs for their general CLE credits, but must take their ethics credits with live programs or conference calls.)
All times shown are Central time. All programs begin promptly at the time shown. The phone line will be open approximately five minutes prior to the times shown. Please call in approximately five minutes prior to the start time so that attendance and opening remarks can be taken care of prior to the start of the program. All programs are live lectures.

Ethics Refresher 2015. Live program presented by Richard Clem. This 4-part program is a comprehensive review of the Rules of Professional Conduct for attorneys in Minnesota and Wisconsin. Most states have adopted substantially similar rules governing lawyers, and this course will review the rules as adopted in these and other states. Where the rules differ, we will go over the differences as adopted in other states. Seeing these differences gives insight into the meaning of the rule in all states. Many lawyers review the Rules in their entirety only once, and that is before they take the Multistate Professional Responsibility Exam in law school. But the rules change over the years and decades, and some of the finer points might be forgotten. We'll cover many of the rules, and the written materials will cover the rules in their entirety. The parts stand alone and can be taken in any order. The course materials for this portion of the program are available at this link.
Elimination of Bias. Live program presented by Richard Clem. We'll start by looking at the rules governing bias within the legal profession, which is a subject covered by both the General Rules of Practice and the Rules of Professional Conduct. We will then see how well we are collectively doing as a profession and legal system in abiding by those rules. We will do so through the eyes of participants at a series of community dialogues at which community members were asked to describe their experiences and discuss ideas for advancing racial equality and fairness in the courts. All participants are welcome to share their insights.
The course materials for this portion of the program are available at this link. In addition to these course materials, we'll probably talk about the following three persons. You probably recognize the names of two of them, but not the third:
Elimination of Bias Learning Goals
This program will run sixty continuous minutes, will relate directly to the practice of law, and is designed to meet
the first and third learning goals for elimination of bias courses:
We will begin by referencing the Supreme Court's 1993 report on the elimination of bias in the judicial system, and we will also look at how both the Rules of Professional Conduct and the General Rules of Practice require us as lawyers to avoid bias.
Then, we will look at how well we are doing in meeting these requirements, as seen by various communities, including communities of color. In particular, we'll examine the suggestions made by members of the public at community dialogues held over the past three years by the Supreme Court's Racial Fairness Committee.
There will be opportunities for participants to discuss these suggestions, and to offer our own suggestions on how we can fulfill these professional obligations.
All programs will be presented live by Richard P. Clem, who has a B.A. in history from the University of Minnesota, and a J.D., cum laude, from Hamline University School of Law. He has been in private practice in the Twin Cities for 25 years. His reported cases include: Asociacion Nacional de Pescadores a Pequena Escala o Artesanales de Colombia v. Dow Quimica de Colombia, 988 F.2d 559, rehearing denied, 5 F.3d 530 (5th Cir. 1993), cert. denied, 510 U.S. 1041 (1994); LaMott v. Apple Valley Health Care Center, 465 N.W.2d 585 (Minn. Ct. App. 1991); Abo el Ela v. State, 468 N.W.2d 580 (Minn. Ct. App. 1991).
