High quality, reasonably priced CLE opportunities
Minnesota Elimination of Bias for only $25 per credit
I'm offering the following conference call CLE programs in April through June 2019. This is a convenient way to satisfy your CLE requirements, for $25 per credit. Programs on this page are offered for Minnesota credit, but credit in other states is also available. Upon registration, you will be given a telephone number and access code. At the time of the program, you simply call in, enter the access code, and listen to the program. You can submit live questions during the program. For ethics programs, please click here.
Another option for completing your two bias credits is my on-demand program. The cost for two approved credits is only $39. You can find more details at this link.
For all programs, the phone line opens ten minutes before the times shown, and opening remarks take place about five minutes before the time shown. The program begins promptly at the time shown, and runs one hour. All programs are live lectures. Please call in at least five minutes before the program start time.
It's recommended that you start with part 1, but the two parts of the program can be taken in any order.
Note regarding end of month programs: The Sunday bias program will take place as scheduled. I would like to consolidate programs as much as possible, and plan to cancel the Saturday bias programs. If you need bias credits, please sign up for the Sunday program. On the other hand, if you absolutely can't make it on Sunday, please let me know and I'll do my best to work you in Saturday. I also have a three credit ethics program on Saturday and Sunday.
I will be unavailable late Friday afternoon, but if you register Friday, I will send you a confirmation Saturday morning. In case you have trouble registering, you can just call in to the program, and we'll figure out the registration later. Please call in shortly before 3:30 Sunday to 1-712-775-8972. When prompted, enter the conference code 127735. When I take attendance, just let me know that you're not registered yet.

Elimination of Bias 2019 Live lecture presented by Richard Clem. We'll start by looking at the rules governing bias within the legal profession, which is a subject covered by both the General Rules of Practice and the Rules of Professional Conduct. We will then see how well we are collectively doing as a profession and legal system in abiding by those rules. We will do so through the eyes of participants at a series of community dialogues at which community members were asked to describe their experiences and discuss ideas for advancing racial equality and fairness in the courts. All participants are welcome to share their insights.
Then, we will look at how well we are doing in meeting these requirements, as seen by various communities, including communities of color. In particular, we'll examine the suggestions made by members of the public at community dialogues held over the past several years by the Supreme Court's Committee for Equality and Justice. This course covers material developed at those programs through October, 2017.
Elimination of Bias Learning Goals: This program is offered for Minnesota Elimination of Bias credit, and meets the learning goals set by the Minnesota Board of Continuing Legal Education. Each program is sixty continuous minutes, relates directly to the practice of law, and is designed to meet the first and third learning goals for elimination of bias courses:
1. To educate lawyers about the elimination of bias or prejudice in the legal profession, in the practice of law, and/or
in the administration of justice; ...
3. To educate lawyers about the problems identified in the Supreme Court's Race Bias and Gender Fairness Task Force
Reports, as well as in other studies, reports or treatises which describe bias and prejudice in the legal profession, in the
practice of law, and/or in the administration of justice.
We will begin by referencing the Supreme Court's 1993 report on the elimination of bias in the judicial system, and we will
also look at how both the Rules of Professional Conduct and the General Rules of Practice require us as lawyers to avoid
bias.
The course materials are available at the following link:
All programs will be presented live by Richard P. Clem, who has a B.A. in history from the University of Minnesota, and a J.D., cum laude, from Hamline University School of Law. He has been in private practice in the Twin Cities for 25 years. His reported cases include: Asociacion Nacional de Pescadores a Pequena Escala o Artesanales de Colombia v. Dow Quimica de Colombia, 988 F.2d 559, rehearing denied, 5 F.3d 530 (5th Cir. 1993), cert. denied, 510 U.S. 1041 (1994); LaMott v. Apple Valley Health Care Center, 465 N.W.2d 585 (Minn. Ct.
