Conference Call CLE: June 2013

$25 per credit

This CLE program took place in the past. Please visit my CLE page for information on upcoming programs.

If you need to complete your CLE by June 30, you've come to the right place. According to the Minnesota Board of CLE website, I'm the only provider in Minnesota offering programs this weekend. All programs are approved for Minnesota CLE credit. We'll be doing ethics starting at 2:20 PM Sunday and elimination of bias starting at 4:40 PM. To register for the phone program, please use the link below, or simply send an e-mail to clem.law@usa.net. You can join the program in progress at any time, and take as many credits as you need. When you register online, I'll get back with you as soon as possible with the instructions for calling in. I need to send these out manually, so please check right before the scheduled program.

I have scheduled two hours of ethics starting at 7:30 PM. Currently, there are no registrations for the evening programs. Therefore, I would strongly prefer if you could take the ethics programs in the afternoon. However, if you need the credits, I'll be happy to do the evening programs, even if it means running a program for one attorney.

All programs have been approved for Minnesota CLE credit. You can enter your credits on the MBCLE website as soon as the program ends. If you have already completed your ethics and bias credits, you can use the additional credits to satisfy your general 45 credit requirement.

The following conference call CLE programs are scheduled for June 2013. This is a convenient way to satisfy your CLE requirements, for only $25 per credit. I have both noon hour and evening programs scheduled. If these times don't work for you, please contact me, since I can schedule additional programs upon request. Upon registration, you will be given a toll-free telephone number and access code. At the time of the program, you simply call in, enter the access code, and listen to the program. You can submit live questions during the program. CLE credit has been applied for in Wisconsin and Minnesota, as shown on the table below. Credit is available in other states by reciprocity (for example, New York is reciprocal with Wisconsin, so you can satisfy your New York requirement with these programs).

With the programs on this page, you can complete up to six Minnesota credits, including your entire ethics and bias requirements. If you still need more credits, I have links to inexpensive programs by other providers at my Don't Panic! page.

Course Description

Ethics Refresher 2013. Live program presented by Richard Clem. This 4-part program is a comprehensive review of the Rules of Professional Conduct for attorneys in Wisconsin and Minnesota. Most states have adopted substantially similar rules governing lawyers, and this course will review the rules as adopted in these and other states. Where the rules differ, we will go over the differences as adopted in other states. Seeing these differences gives insight into the meaning of the rule in all states. Many lawyers review the Rules in their entirety only once, and that is before they take the Multistate Professional Responsibility Exam in law school. But the rules change over the years and decades, and some of the finer points might be forgotten. We'll cover many of the rules, and the written materials will cover the rules in their entirety. This is part 1 of a five part program. The parts stand alone and can be taken in any order. The course materials for this portion of the program are available at this link.

Elimination of Bias 2013. Live program presented by Richard Clem. We'll start by looking at the rules governing bias within the legal profession, which is a subject covered by both the General Rules of Practice and the Rules of Professional Conduct. We will then see how well we are collectively doing as a profession and legal system in abiding by those rules. We will do so through the eyes of participants at a series of community dialogues at which community members were asked to describe their experiences and discuss ideas for advancing racial equality and fairness in the courts. All participants are welcome to share their insights.

The course materials for this portion of the program are available at this link.

Elimination of Bias Learning Goals

This program will run sixty continuous minutes, will relate directly to the practice of law, and is designed to meet the first and third learning goals for elimination of bias courses:

We will begin by referencing the Supreme Court's 1993 report on the elimination of bias in the judicial system, and we will also look at how both the Rules of Professional Conduct and the General Rules of Practice require us as lawyers to avoid bias.

Then, we will look at how well we are doing in meeting these requirements, as seen by various communities, including communities of color. In particular, we'll examine the suggestions made by members of the public at community dialogues held over the past three years by the Supreme Court's Racial Fairness Committee.

There will be opportunities for participants to discuss these suggestions, and to offer our own suggestions on how we can fulfill these professional obligations.
