CLE Options for Military Attorneys

Richard P. Clem Continuing Legal Education

It can be difficult if you are a military attorney and need to complete your Continuing Legal Education credits in your home state while serving overseas. This is especially true if you are licensed in a state which requires "live" programs. Many states allow you to complete some or all of your CLE (MCLE) hours with on-demand internet programs. Wisconsin, for example, allows its attorneys to complete ten of their thirty required credits with these programs. These programs are generally available 24 hours per day and are an extremely convenient option.

If you are lucky enough to be licensed in a state that allows on-demand credits, then you can often find inexpensive or even free programs to complete your hours. An excellent resource that you can use to find these programs is the 4 Free CLE website. Even if the programs are not approved for credit in your state, it is often a simple matter to apply for credit.

There are always a few "live" programs (such as live webcasts) listed on that site, so you can get some of your credits even in states that don't allow "on demand" programs. Unfortunately, almost all of them are scheduled during the business day in the continental U.S. If you are stationed overseas, you might not be able to take these programs if they are scheduled at an inconvenient hour.

I am a CLE provider in Minnesota, and I specialize in low cost, high quality, programs. These include conference call programs which you can access by phone. Normally, participants call in to a U.S. toll-free number. But if this number is not accessible to you for any reason, I'm happy to work with you, and we can arrange to have you participate through Skype or some other service. My programs are also scheduled for attorneys in the U.S., but if the times are not convenient for you, I'm happy to work with you and schedule a program at a convenient time. If you need CLE hours and I don't have a program scheduled that will fit your needs, just let me know and I will schedule one. If that means I have to get up at 3:00 AM to do a program for one attorney, I'm willing to do so.

I normally apply for CLE credit in Minnesota, Wisconsin, and/or Iowa, but my programs have been approved in many other states. I'll work with you to make sure you will receive full credit in the state(s) in which you are licensed.

Many of my programs cover the Rules of Professional Responsibility, and can be taken for ethics credits in almost all states. I also have other general interest programs available. All of my conference calls are "live" programs consisting of live lectures and/or discussions. and are eligible for full credit in virtually all states. (Unfortunately, there are a few exceptions. Nebraska, for example, allows some telephone programs, but at least six hours per year must be in the form of live lectures, with everyone in the same room.)

I generally charge $25 per credit for my programs. If you need one or two credits, that's a bargain. If you need a lot of credits, let me know, and we'll figure out how to do it at the lowest possible cost.

My normal conference call programs are listed on my main CLE page. But if none of those programs is at a convenient time for you, please contact me, and I'll help you get your credits taken care of at the lowest possible cost. Feel free to contact me at clem.law@usa.net
