Program Description

Ethics Refresher 2023. Live lecture presented by Richard Clem. This will be a comprehensive review of the Rules of Professional Conduct for attorneys in Iowa, Nebraska, and other states. Many lawyers review the Rules in their entirety only once, and that is before they take the Multistate Professional Responsibility Exam in law school. But the rules change over the years and decades, and some of the finer points might be forgotten. Therefore, this course will serve as a useful refresher for the practitioner to avoid ethical pitfalls. Live lecture, 210 minutes.

How to Work With Interpreters. Live lecture presented by Richard Clem and Yippy Clem. Precise communication is important for attorneys, and when working with Limited English Proficient (LEP) individuals, precise communication is a challenge. We will learn the difference between certified, rostered, and casual interpreters. We will learn how the LEP person's expectations of the U.S. legal system can affect communication. And we will learn the specifics of your interpreted encounter, as well as practical tips that will make communications easier and clearer. Live lecture, 90 minutes.

All attendees will receive a free pair of eclipse glasses for viewing the April 8, 2024, total eclipse of the sun, courtesy of MyEclipseGlasses.com. If you register in time, we will mail them prior to October 14, so that you can also view the partial eclipse that will take place on that date.

Course Materials

The course materials will be distributed at the door. If you would like to print a copy prior to the program (or "go green" and view them on your portable device), they will be available before the program at the following links:
