Program Description

Iowa/Nebraska Ethics.Live lecture presented by Richard Clem. This will be a comprehensive review of the Rules of Professional Conduct for attorneys in Iowa, Nebraska, and other states. Many lawyers review the Rules in their entirety only once, and that is before they take the Multistate Professional Responsibility Exam in law school. But the rules change over the years and decades, and some of the finer points might be forgotten. Therefore, this course will serve as a useful refresher for the practitioner to avoid ethical pitfalls.

This year, we'll place a special emphasis on Conflicts of Interest. While the subject is addressed by Rule 1.7, the text of the rule gives little practical guidance. We'll spend time talking about common situations where the practitioner should be alert to potential conflicts. Live lecture, 240 minutes.

School Safety. As lawyers and community leaders, we'll take time to think about what we can do in the wake of an epidemic of school violence. We'll look at the legal duties of school districts, and in that context, we'll explore possible solutions. We won't come up with the answer to school violence, but we'll try to identify the thought process that will allow us to find rational solutions. Live lecture, 60 minutes.
